REFUSING FASHION: REI KAWAKUBO
For Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit
2008, Detroit

> Exhibition

For this show we designed posters that were hung at evenly spaced intervals around the museum to lead people into the exhibit. We also designed a series of about 30 posters that made up a timeline of Rei Kawakubo's life. These ran around the outer wall of the exhibit. We had very little time and money to execute everything. We created a simple layout and printed them on a second-hand plotter printer in Danielle's studio.

We also designed a gallery guide brochure that opened up into a poster. We had to design the brochure before final decisions had been made about all the materials in the show. There was no artwork available to use for the poster and we thought at first we might have to do some kind of typographic solution. But then we realized that the curators' assistants were taking snapshots of every garment going into the show in order to keep track of things for themselves. They gave us permission to use these photos on the poster.

> Book

For the exhibition catalogue we worked with photographer Corine Vermeulen to devise a system for documenting the entire space of the exhibition. Corine stood in a series of fixed spots in the gallery and took photos while rotating around 360 degrees. We used each of those spots to determine the structure of the book — each set of circular photos resulted in one signature. It turned out to be a thoroughly complicated and time-consuming process to execute. The spreads of exhibition photos alternate with essays and images from Comme des Garçons shows.
