| 365: AIGA SHOW For AIGA 2007, New York With Tamara Maletic and Dan Michaelson (Linked by Air) Each year the AIGA, the American professional organization of graphic designers, hosts an exhibition of work from their annual graphic design competition. The design duo Linked by Air invited Lana to join them in creating the exhibition and accompanying materials for the exhibition. We started by reflecting upon the possible ways to present graphic design in a gallery, where it does not actually belong. We wanted to offer a natural way for people to experience the material in the exhibition. We were interested in opening up the design process for visitors so they could participate in creating the exhibition. We organized the gallery space rather informally, like a large living room. Much of the furniture we found in the building. Several pieces (shelves, panels and platforms) were made for the occasion. All the exhibit materials were placed on platforms or shelves so visitors could take them and move them around gallery. No place was wrong! On the walls of the gallery we inscribed the names of all the authors and projects in over-sized letters. At the time, the three of us were staying in three different locations. All of our brainstorming and communication took place over Skype, which also influenced the aesthetic of the exhibition. Thus, the invitation and the poster which had to be printed only a few days after we were hired included the transcript of the Skype chat we had about the exhibition design. The B1-size poster for the show is in fact an untrimmed offset-printed sheet of invitations. The gallery guide was also made from a folded poster featuring one of our early sketches. |
